Lake Oswego stone castle with square towers is for sale at $2.6 million

Castles are popular around the world and in Oregon, the architectural style most associated with the Middle Ages continues to be constructed. Victorian-era houses and new mansions have castle-like bay windows and round turrets. Some owners expand the fanciful theme by adding chiseled stone walls, stained glass coats of arms and lookout towers.

The whimsical Northwest Portland estate called Blackberry Castle has a 13,000-square-foot French chateau completed a decade ago with fairy-tale conical roofs and a concealed wine grotto in the pinot noir vineyards. An offer to buy the 6.4-acre property hidden in the Forest Park neighborhood was accepted and the name of the new owner and the sale price will be revealed in September, once the transaction is completed.

But there’s another castle on the market. A Lake Oswego residence with three square towers at 1777 Skyland Drive is for sale at $2,595,000.

Listing broker Barbara Carbone said the owners selected the undeveloped, 3.56-acre parcel in 1993 because of the views of the Willamette River, Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams. Originally, the home was to be designed in the English Tudor Revival style. But to adhere to covenants, conditions and restrictions (CC&Rs) in the Skylands neighborhood, the roof line needed to be lowered and a more Mediterranean style was chosen, she said.

“That event was the catalyst to creating a European-inspired home where the family could house their antiques, medieval artifacts and artwork,” said Carbone of Keller Williams Realty Portland Premiere. “It’s a unique home searching for its new royal family to call it home.”

There’s no moat, but there is a swimming pool.

Enter through the wood front door with a stained-glass peephole and see arched windows, a floor of paving stones and decorative wrought-iron on the staircase railing. The living room has one of the home’s two stone-clad fireplaces under its vaulted and exposed beamed ceiling. French doors open to the main viewing deck.

The three-level house has 4,871 square feet of living space, including four bedrooms, with the primary suite on the main level.

A stone courtyard and terraced garden were created to look as though they were transferred from a European villa, said Carbone, who added that there is a nod to one “worldly adventure or another around every corner.”

Who would love this home? “The ultimate buyer for this property is someone with a deep appreciation for European-inspired architecture, folklore and style,” Carbone told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “Someone who craves to live in a home full of detailed character and charm.”

She added that the property works for someone who likes to entertain indoors and out, taste wine in the climate-controlled wine cellar that stores 200 bottles, play games in the billiards room and use the indoor workshop and deep, three-car garage.

“Someone looking to wow their friends with spectacular views of jaw-dropping sunsets in this home that’s aimed to please,” she said.
